Why this site exists

The pet industry runs on underestimated costs: the #1 surprise new pet owners report is how much more their pet costs than they expected. We started Paw Cost Guide with a simple idea — give people transparent, itemized cost calculators built on published data, so nobody adopts a dog or cat blind to the real numbers.

Who we are

Paw Cost Guide is an independent publishing project run by a small editorial team of pet owners, data researchers, and a veterinary-cost analyst. We are not a pet store, breeder, or insurance company — we sell nothing, and that independence is the point. Our estimates don't favor any brand, clinic, or product.

Editorial lead: Our cost models are maintained by our research editor, who has spent six years compiling pet-care pricing data across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Every calculator on this site is reviewed against current published figures at least once a year, and sooner when major cost drivers (insurance premiums, vet pricing) move.

How our estimates work

Every number on this site comes from a documented cost model — not guesswork:

  1. Base cost models by size class. Dogs are modeled in four size classes (small, medium, large, giant) and cats in two lifestyle classes (indoor, indoor-outdoor), because a Chihuahua and a Great Dane genuinely cost different amounts to feed, medicate, and insure.
  2. Breed adjustments. Our 30 breed pages layer breed-specific grooming needs, known health predispositions, and typical purchase prices on top of the base model.
  3. Regional awareness. Vet costs in major cities run 20–40% above national averages; our guides flag where location moves the number most.
  4. Cross-checked sources. Every model is reconciled against at least two of our primary data sources below. When sources disagree, we publish the range and say so.

Data sources

We build on published, verifiable industry data:

Editorial policy

  • Reviewed annually. Every page shows its last-updated date. Cost models are re-validated against fresh source data at least once per year.
  • Corrections welcome. Spot a number that looks off? Tell us — we investigate every report and publish corrections.
  • No paid placements in estimates. Affiliate links (clearly disclosed) never change a calculator's numbers.
  • Estimates, not advice. Our figures help you budget; they are not financial or veterinary advice. Your actual costs will vary by location, provider, and pet.

Privacy

All calculators run entirely in your browser. We don't ask for your name, email, or any personal details to use them, and we store nothing about your inputs. Read our Privacy Policy for the full picture.
